I absolutely ADORE jokes based around puns. It's the language geek in me coming out I think, they make me giggle.
Have you heard the one which goes, when is a door not a door? When it's ajar...
Honestly, you can take the same concept for this style of photography. When is a photoshoot not a photoshoot? When it's a documentary photoshoot...
The things which often come to mind when we imagine photoshoots - styled clothes and hair, careful choice of location (maybe even a studio), lots of direction by the photographer - really don't apply here. It's a photoshoot, but not like THAT. The aim of these photoshoots is to capture the real, the honest, the raw, the already-almost-nostalgic everyday beauty of your life. In practice, that looks like:
Wear what you want. No, really. Wear the things which are most you. Sure, if you want some guidance I can give it, but it's really not important.
Do what you want. I can turn up and capture whatever you happen to be doing, or you can plan a favourite activity or two (some families feel more at ease with a plan!). The focus is on you enjoying your time together as a family in the ways which make sense for you. Trust me, it really does make wonderful images.
Be where you want. In your home, a place special to you, or a mix of the two - I'm there for it all. What matters is that wherever we are, it's somewhere you want to remember.
As you're doing your thing - whatever that looks like - I'm right there with you, chatting away. Most people say it feels more like having a friend over who just happens to be holding a camera. There's no posing (although we can throw in a few casual family portraits if you'd like them), and the most I might do is suggest you shift position a tiny bit (but even that doesn't happen often).
Your only job is to be YOU, who you are as family. That's magic, right there - and I capture it all.
